Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies’

Human Rights in Action Handbooks

CAEFS is comprised of 24 local societies located across the country. Each of our locals is their own self-governing entity, with their own board of directors, executive director, and staff. While we operate individually, we also know that we are stronger together. Our network comes together to share resources and knowledge, build partnerships, and convene on key issues – all in service of offering the best support possible to criminalized women and gender-diverse people in Canada. To learn more about CAEFS, please visit their website here.

Ombudsman Information and Resources

What is an Ombudsman? According to the Canadian Encyclopedia;

An ombudsman is an independent officer of the legislature who investigates complaints from the public against administrative action and, if finding the action unfair, recommends a remedy. Unlike a court, an ombudsman does not have power to annul a decision, but in most cases recommendations to the administrative authorities are accepted. If not, the matter can be reported to the legislature. The complaint procedure is much less formal and costly than a court appeal; all it involves is writing a letter to the ombudsman.
