As you may know, every year we mark Elizabeth Fry Week during the week leading up to Mother’s Day. The goal of the week is to enhance public awareness and education around criminalized and vulnerable women, trans, non-binary, and Two Spirit people in Canada. We continue to mark this week as Elizabeth Fry Week because most women in prison are mothers, and many of these women were the sole supporters of their families at the time they were incarcerated. When mothers are sentenced to prison, their children are sentenced to separation. We draw attention to this reality by ending Elizabeth Fry Week on Mother’s Day each year. We are excited to announce that this year’s theme for Elizabeth Fry Week is “Human Rights in Action”.

Thank-you to Symphony New Brunswick for your support of EFryNB and your participation in projects such as Singing My Way Home. This virtual concert is a gift from SNB and the Saint John String Quartet for all our friends and supporters to enjoy at home over the holiday season.

EFryNB’s Singing My Way Home project created opportunities for song writing, sharing stories, connecting with other others and feeling a sense of empowerment and purpose by giving back to the community. Three members of Symphony New Brunswick and two facilitator/songwriters gave a concert of the women’s songs at the New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre for incarcerated women and staff; songs scored by Andrew Reed of SNB. Our EFry outreach volunteer in Miramichi opened her home for rehearsal before the concert. Covid-19 arrived the next week resulting in planned community concerts in Miramichi, Fredericton a & Moncton to be canceled. Covid-19 restrictions lifted slightly in September to allow us to offer a Singing My Way Home concert at the Imperial Theatre. You can find their works below, including live performances and lyrics!
